The Giver (2014 Movie Review)
The Giver was one of my favorite books, so I was very excited to hear that there was a movie for it! I watched this movie with three other people who had also recently read the book, and we all had various and differing opinions, but I wanted to share with you mine.
The Giver is the story of a boy named Jonas. He lives in a community where everything that interferes with The Elders dystopian way of life is taken away. From being able to see color, to being able to feel love. When Jonas starts working alongside a stranger older man called The Giver, he starts to learn the truth to the life he is living. When Jonas learns he might be able to save someone he loves, he must make the right—or wrong in The Elders eyes—choices…
The two things that I think they did the most accurately in this movie were the actors, and how they did very good at playing their roles in this movie, and showing the characters well, and I really liked how well The Giver’s house was depicted and shown in the movie, because it’s exactly how it is described in the book. That being said, they definitely veered off of the storyline quite a bit.
They didn’t make movies to the whole Giver Quartet, —which I think would have been a better idea— so they had to add a lot to make just the beginning—The Giver—of the bigger picture—the whole series—into just one movie. They added a whole romance that was only hinted in in the book, and made it on a whole larger scale. They also had to add a “bad guy” you could call it, because the actual “bad guy” of the series doesn’t really show up until the other books. So they had to make up a whole other part to the story that wasn’t actually there. So, all that being said, I think it would have been a much better idea if they had made even just two movie that showed all the series.
I hope this was good feedback, and I would still encourage you to watch this movie for yourself!
