Gathering Blue, by Lois Lowry (Book Review)

Gathering Blue is set in a different community than in The Giver, it starts out with Kira, a girl, left orphaned, physically “broken” and uncertain of her future. Other “broken” and unwanted people are left to go to the Field, where they are neglected and devoured by “beasts”. Kira, is brought to the Council of Guardians, to find out what we future will hold. The Council, surprisingly offers her “protection” and has her living in the Council Edifice building. By using her special gift she can live what seems to be a good life. But things aren’t always as they seem… are they? Kira learns why she is actually here, what happened to her parents, the danger her and her friends are in, and what her future might be if she doesn’t change things around her.

Gathering Blue is a very interesting story. You feel heart ache, as well as joy while reading this. There are a few things that I really enjoyed about this book, I really liked how Lois Lowry really put yourself in a life you wouldn’t normally be in. It’s not every book that you find yourself in the life of an imperfect, crippled, cast aside character, and it is really interesting and beautiful see it. You get to feel the feelings Kira, in this book, feels being someone people wouldn’t necessarily talk to first or the person people don’t even want, and yet finding joy in all of that, and finding people who realize that they do need her and the change she brings in their lives as well as the change they bring in her life. I also liked how in this book you don’t really know what will happen next. One chapter you think you have everything figured out, and then the next you find out things you never guessed.

I would say this book is for 12 yo to adult, The Giver had some more mature content, this book did to, but not as much so.
