Iceberg, by Jennifer A. Neilsen (Book Review)
“Grief is like the flu. It brushes by some, barely leaving its mark. For others, it will take hold, perhaps for a very long time before a person finds healing.”
When twelve year old Hazel’s father dies, and her mother has no other choice but to send Hazel on the Titanic, the ship named after the powerful Titans, the unstoppable and unsinkable ship bound for New York where Hazel can work to support her family. But Hazel doesn’t want to work in New York. She wants to be a journalist, and she believes that writing about the Titanic on its maiden voyage will make the right amount of money for her family. But when Hazel finds that she doesn’t have enough money for her ticket, and she has no other choice but to stowaway on board secretly, which only leads her to more of the secrets on board…
This book was very good! Of course we all know the tragic story of the Titanic, but Jennifer Nielsen brought the story out in very climatic and mysterious fashion. Jennifer Nielsen’s writing style, as I have said, is very much to my personal liking. Even though there’s not very much romance, they are all very much thrillers.
In all her books there is so much character development, and to me that’s the most important part of a book. If you read my other reviews on Jennifer Nielsen’s writing, you know how much I’ve said how all her books make you really feel for the characters and if anything ever happens to them, you really feel it. I’ve read so many other people saying how this book made them cry and feel so many different emotions, which is definitely accurate. That being said, this one definitely didn’t have as much as the other Jennifer Neilsen books I’ve read.
This book I think would be very interesting to 11-12 years olds who might not know to much about this topic, simple because most teens and adults have already learned about the Titanic and it’s story. But I’ve also read where a lot of people were saying how this book was really informative to them in a lot of different ways, and I’d definitely be one of them.
One of the other things I liked about this book was that there was quite a few lessons learned, that were really good and beautiful, which can apply to any human’s lifestyle. I would rate this book a 7 out of 10.
