The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, by Avi (Book Review)

“Not every 13-year-old girl is accused of murder, brought to trial, and found guilty. But I was such a girl.”

Charlotte Doyle is a gentleman’s daughter, who is on her way home aboard a ship called the Seahawk. She is the only passenger and only female among the Seahawk’s crew and captain. What seems at first to be a boring journey across the sea, turns into an interesting tale of life and work aboard a ship as a member of the crew, and a murder mystery…

This book was very interesting and hard to put down after I got started! I read it in only a couple of days, and found it hard to get my mind out of the journey on the Seahawk. I was constantly wondering about the mystery and characters, and was eager to finish! It was very different from the dystopian books I have been reading, and I wasn’t very interested at first in reading this book at first, but I made myself start it, and I was very surprised in how much I enjoyed it! It’s was a very thrilling story and definitely one I’ll remember.
It was a little slow to start, but it might only have seemed that way because I wasn’t very intrigued in starting in the first place. It also ends a bit unclear, but sometimes stories do have a very abrupt ending to really make the reader think and digest the rest of the story to its fullest.
This cover of the book I found and I really liked because it’s how I pictured Charlotte almost perfectly. Her character was very interesting, and it was cool to see how a such a self loving and not very caring person can change into quite the opposite.
I would recommend this book for 12+ and would rate it an 8 out of 10!
