Fawkes, by Nadine Brandes (Book Review)
“They had something worth dying for.
Ah, but you have something they don't.
And what's that?
Something worth living for.”
And what's that?
Something worth living for.”
Thomas Fawkes has the plague. The plague that is rapidly sweeping through England, turning people to stone. His only apparent hope is to help his father in a plot to assassinate the king to cure it. But when the girl he loves knows another way to stop it, Thomas is torn between succumbing to the White Light, or following through with helping his father and the plot. To save one, he must turn on the other, without looking back…
“There has always been fear. There will always be fear. It's up to us to stand tall, even when the fear demands we bow to it.”
This book is such a masterpiece! It’s such a unique plot, and the story and character development were very well done. Nadine Brandes came forth yet again with such a spectacular story.
Like her Romanov novel, Nadine Brandes created a story based off of history. I love the fact that they were both based off of truth, because it makes it so much more rememberable. Even in the back of her books she adds what was true, and what was her imagination, which really helps me understand it a lot.
She touched on a lot that was going on in England at the time, including the rule of King John, and the true —in fact—attempted Gunpowder Plot, and the slave trade. You get a mix of fantasy, romance, and truth while reading a compelling book.
One of the things that made me like Romanov a little bit more than Fawkes, was that I simply could relate a little bit more to the main character in Romanov. But that was really the only one thing that made me enjoy Romanov more. Fawkes is similar, but also completely different in ways. So I’d definitely recommend this book.
I think is definitely a young adult (13-17yo) novel, and I’d rate it a 9 out of 10.
